10News School of the Week: Bayshore High School

School of the Week: Bayshore High School

It’s Friday, so you know it’s that time of the week where we will be recognize a different school in Tampa Bay as 10News’ School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida . This isn’t just a pep rally, we are headed into the classrooms to showcase the great achievements of the students, faculty and staff. Every Friday we will be live from the school campus beginning at 6 a.m. and don’t forget to watch at 6 p.m. as well to catch the highlights from earlier in the day.

We’re happy to announce that our school this week is Bayshore High School in Manatee County. Congratulations Bruins!  In Manatee County, Bayshore has unique opportunities for their students. One of those opportunities in the dance program. The program is open to students of any skill-set and they learn classical ballet, jazz, modern and hip hop dance. Students with no prior dance experience are welcome also. The best of the best in the program try out for the performance group, the Honeybears (which also includes a few Bruins). Currently the group is training for their performances scheduled  November 9 and 10 and consists of a tribute to the late artist Prince. The showcase will take place on campus and is open to the public. Bayshore also is the only school in the Manatee School District to offer American Sign Language. Currently there are approximately 200 students enrolled in levels 1-4, taught by a certified ASLTA teacher. And while AVID is found in other schools, Bayshore is currently working to become one of twelve in the state of Florida that is a national demonstration school. If other schools in the country are interested in having an AVID program, they head to a national demonstration school to see how it’s done. Local college students, many of which are former Bayshore grads, return to campus to help tutor in AVID. If you walk the halls of “The ‘Shore”, you can feel the school spirit. Student artwork lines the walls, and the hallways have inspirational names. Every Wednesday is college spirit day and you will find an eclectic mix of universities represented in shirts and gear on the faculty.

If you have a recommendation for 10 News’ School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida, email us the name of the school and why they should be featured at 10schools@wtsp.com. We’re looking for elementary, middle and high schools. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to see how great the school is throughout the week. If 10News is out at your school make sure to show your spirit by snapping pictures and tag them with #wtsp and #RiseWith10. That way we can find your photos and post them here!
