2 die in Daytona Beach plane crash

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (AP) - A small plane crashed into a field after taking off from Daytona Beach International Airport, killing both people on board. Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood says the Cessna 172 crashed and burst into flames late Monday.

Chitwood told the Daytona Beach News-Journal that witnesses say it sounded like the plane's engine failed shortly after taking off. It crashed as it turned to head back to the runway.

The bodies were taken to the medical examiner's office. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are sending investigators to the scene Tuesday.
