A survivor's good piece of advice

SUNTREE, Fla. -- A piece of advice from FPL's External Affairs Manager Bart Gaetjeans.

Don't know why exactly but it's providing me a measure of comfort as I ride it out in Suntree with two dogs - and a cat that won't quit hissing at me.

From Bart:

"I am riding this one out in Titusville.

One piece of advice I learned from Hurricane Andrew - if the storm starts getting rough, head to the strongest room in your house. In my case it is the bathroom. During Andrew people used a mattress to cover themselves.

After the storm, use spray paint on your shutters or plywood with the message: 'We're okay' or 'need help!'

I have complete faith in FPL, our elected officials and leaders. We'll get through this together!!!!

May God hold you in the palm of his hand!"

He later added this:

"A couple more hurricane tips. Make as much ice as possible. Take a gallon jug, remove some water for expansion and put it in your freezer. This will keep your freezer cold much like how our great grandparents did with an ice box. As the water thaws, at least you'll have cold water.

Turn your A/C down now so at least you will be cool a bit longer if you lose electricity."

Like I said, it's providing a bit of comfort.
