Tampa, Florida - Police officers are honoring their fallen colleague with tributes and mementos left at a police memorial in front of Tampa Police headquarters.

The first items had been placed before sunrise.

A vase of roses, two burning candles, and a photo were laid in front of the metal-and-stone memorial that commemorates Tampa's 27 fallen police heroes.

In the photo, Corporal Mike Roberts is surrounded by his teammates from TPD's after work hockey team. A grey and navy TPD Hockey jersey has been draped across the center of the monument.

As the light of day hit the monument, officers from inside the building walked out front to carry out the solemn responsibility of sliding the flags that flank the memorial to half staff. First the American flag and then the colorful City of Tampa flag were lowered on their angled flagpoles and tied off.

More officers and civilians have continued to add to the tributes.

A bouquet of flowers was laid on its side and topped with a greeting card in an unmarked white envelope. A yellow silk flower was added. Then a third and fourth bouquet.

Attached to a sunflower is a quotation from the Gospel of John, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."
