Tampa, Florida - The flowers and notes left at the Tampa Police Memorial are a bright example of the dark sorrow this community now bears. And no doubt the officers' families appreciate the many gestures of thanks there.
However, in coming months and years, the families may need more and that's where The Fallen Officers' Memorial Fund comes in.
Donations can be made to the officers' families at the Tampa Bay Federal Credit Union. Anyone wanting to make a donation can go to any TBFCU location or mail it to:
Curtis/Kocab Memorial Fund
c/o The Tampa Police Memorial Committee
PO Box 172995
Tampa, FL 33672
Please make any checks payable to the Curtis/Kocab Memorial Fund.
Niko's Restaurant in Oldsmar is holding a fundraiser for the families on July 11 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be food, a band and a bouncy house for kids.
A $5 donation is requested and all donations will go to the Tampa Police Department's fund for the slain officers' families. The restaurant is located at 3705 Tampa Road.
"Out of respect for the families, I knew we had to turn our anger into something positive," said owner Andonia Tirikos.
The Gold Shield Foundation also helps families financially. Initially, families receive $5,000, but the main mission of the group is paying for the college education of spouses and children.
The Gold Shield Foundation was founded in 1981 by Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and so far the group has helped 16 children and two spouses graduate from college.
WestShore Plaza is also partnering with local radio stations 93.3FLZ and 970WFLA to continue promoting donation efforts for the families of fallen Tampa Police Officers Curtis and Kocab. Checks made payable to Tampa Police Memorial Fund, Inc. (reference Curtis and Kocab on check) are being accepted at Guest Services, near Macy's.
