St. Petersburg, Florida - When the Tampa Bay Rays announced their plans for this year's FanFest, they also mentioned that pieces of FieldTurf, the old playing surface of Tropicana Field, would be available for purchase.
On Friday, the team said the FieldTurf will be sold as 1 ft. by 1 ft. squares for $25 each, and the proceeds will benefit the memorial fund for the fallen St. Petersburg police officers, the ALS Association, and the Rays Foundation.
About two weeks ago, the Rays began the process of tearing up the old FieldTurf, and installing new AstroTurf GameDay Grass, the official synthetic turf of Major League Baseball.
The Rays say the new AstroTurf plays even more like real grass than the old FieldTurf.
Rays FanFest is on Saturday, February 19, from 10am to 5pm at Tropicana Field. Admission is free.
