St. Petersburg, Florida - A man was found dead behind a barber shop in south St. Petersburg early Thursday morning.

Marquell Burge, 30, died of a gunshot wound to the upper body, according to investigators.

There was a crowd behind the barber shop when this happened, but no witnesses are talking with us, said Lt. Markus Hughes of the St. Petersburg Police Department.

The barber shop is located on Martin Luther King, Jr. Street at 12th Avenue South.

The call, which is being investigated as a homicide, first came in at 2:02 a.m.

Across the street from the barber shop, dozens of people gathered, screamed, cried, moaned and even fought as they watched the scene unfold from the parking lot of a lounge.

Burge's family tells 10 News his nickname is Bo.

"This was a good man.  He knew the Bible backwards and forwards," said one friend at the scene.

"He was killed for greed."

Burge's sister and mother were also on scene, along with the mother of the his child.

His son is seven or eight years old, according to friends.

As of 6:15 a.m., St. Petersburg Police were following several active leads.  There is no description of the suspect or suspects.

Police are not confident that there is any surveillance video of the killing.

"Even if there is, it's so dark back there you probably wouldn't be able to see much," said a St. Petersburg Police acting supervisor.
