Man survives jump from Sunshine Skyway Bridge

St. Petersburg, Florida -- A 21-year-old man jumped from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge Thursday night and survived.

The man he was in a car with his girlfriend and stopped at the top of the bridge. He got out and jumped over the side from the northbound lanes, according to Lt Joel Granata of St. Petersburg Fire/Rescue.

The man landed in the water and managed to swim towards rocks at the base of the bridge. He was found by the crew of Fireboat 11, brought aboard and taken to shore for ambulance transport to the hospital, Lt. Granata said.

His condition was not immediately known. He was declared a trauma alert patient, indicating he suffered potentially life-threatening injuries.

The man's name and further details were not available pending investigation of the incident.
