RIVERVIEW, Florida -- A 21-year-old has been charged with second degree murder in a Saturday shooting that left two young adults dead.
Detectives with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office arrested Tyrell Bragg on Saturday night. Bragg is also facing a firearm possession charge. Detectives say he had been asked to leave a party around 12:30 Saturday morning on U.S. 41 in Riverview, and that soon after, he fired shots into the crowd.
One of the bullets hit 18-year-old Iesha Washington. Detectives say another gun fired by a second unknown shooter may have killed the other victim, 22-year-old Craig Thompson. The sheriff's office says neither of them were the intended target, and they just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Washington's mother, Vannetta Scott, says she got the news at 4:33 Sunday morning when a woman with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office came to her door. She credits detectives with making an arrest so quickly, and also thanks those who have supported her.
"It was the help of my family and friends and people in the neighborhood that helped bring this bastard to justice," she says. "He wasn't going to be able to get away with killing my daughter...I was willing to give my life trying to get his. That's what mothers do, real mothers."
A day after the shooting, Scott still had dozens of family members and friends reaching out to help. Cards of sympathy stood next to photos of Washington proudly displayed throughout the house.
"I gotta watch my daughter go under the ground, so it's a long road. But to know that my daughter's killer is behind bars, that makes it somewhat easier," Scott says. "For any mother or parent: tell your kids you love them while they are here."
According to an affidavit, Bragg says he did attend the party, but denies possessing or shooting a gun. A witness told detectives that Bragg had said he "slumped someone," a term used to mean "killed someone."
