While collecting evidence at a double fatal car accident, police had another issue on their hands. A Tampa suspect tried to steal a car - from one of the accident witnesses

This morning at approximately 5:30 a.m. Deputy Carl Luis. 53 years of age, 32 year veteran responded to a traffic crash involving two fatalities on U.S. Highway 301 and Ranch Road (Florida Highway Patrol worked the traffic crash).
While at the scene, suspect Colby Wade Cardoso, DOB 5-20-91, 4608 East Citrus Circle, Tampa pulled up to the crash scene, exited his vehicle and then attempted to steal a vehicle belonging to a witness that had also stopped at the crash scene. The suspect entered the driver's side of the witnesses 2001 Black Ford pickup truck. In the backseat of the truck was the victim's 5 year old daughter. The suspect attempted to start the vehicle but was unable to.
The suspect then fled on foot, northbound on U. S. Highway 301. Deputy Luis gave chase and was able to catch up with him just inside the Pasco County. As Deputy Luis attempted to detain him, the suspect violently resisted. During the resist, the suspect struck Deputy Luis several times and then attempted to take his firearm out of the holster. Dept. Luis suffered injuries to his hands and neck. The suspect also sustained upper body injuries and was also treated. Both went to local hospitals for treatment.
The suspect is facing the following charges:
Burglary of an occupied vehicle
Attempt Grand Theft Auto
Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer
Resist an Officer with Violence
Depriving and officer of his means of protection (firearm)
