St. Petersburg, Florida - An explosion at the Parkwood Square Condominiums in St. Petersburg left one man dead Sunday morning.
Lt. Joel Granata, a spokesman with St. Petersburg Fire Rescue, says it happened as three people were preparing to go scuba diving. Lt. Granata says, "One person was carrying out the scuba tanks to the car when the tank exploded."
The explosion happened around 6:45 a.m.
Granata says, "We had windows blown out - the front door blown out - and we had a patient that was actually blown out of the front of the house here."
He adds, "The front living room, from what I can tell, was just completely obliterated. We had the scuba tanks remnants scattered throughout."
A man and woman inside the condo were in a different room and were not hurt. The names of the three people involved have not been released yet.
John Madigan from Akron, Ohio was staying at the condo complex with family when it happened. He says he didn't hear the blast, but his wife woke him up to tell him about it. He says some of the neighbors said it sounded like thunder.
Madigan says, "But when I walked out here, it was obvious. The front door is laying a good 30 to 50 yards away from the joint. It's real fortunate that no one was here that could catch the debris that was flying."
Meanwhile, Granata says the investigation continues to try to figure out what sparked the explosion. He's says they're calling in people who specialize in scuba diving to help as well.
