DAYTONA BEACH, Florida (WKMG) - An 82-year-old homeowner whose wife recently died shot and killed a would-be intruder Thursday morning in Daytona Beach, according to police.

The fatal shooting occurred about 6:15 a.m. on Woodland Avenue.

According to Daytona Beach police, the homeowner was awakened by the sound of someone trying to break into his home, so he grabbed a gun and shot once through the door, striking the man in the abdomen.  The homeowner then called authorities saying he shot someone who was trying to get into his house, police said.

The burglary suspect, who police said was wearing a mask and gloves and had a flashlight and screwdriver, was able to get off the porch but collapsed and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We're thankful he did something the criminal justice system couldn't do -- he put this burglar out of business," Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said.

Police said there were pry marks on the door where the man was trying to enter the house.

No names have been released.

Chitwood said the homeowner will likely not face charges because of the "castle doctrine," which allows residents the right to protect their homes if they feel they are in danger.
