TAMPA, Florida -- State Sen. J.D. Alexander is once again pushing for USF-Polytechnic to break off into its own university, the state's 12th. This time, he's looking to the legislature.

Alexander, who had been virtually driving the independence push himself last fall, helped craft a bill introduced Wednesday that would create the Florida Polytechnic University in statute.  The provision, which would create an independent and autonomous school in Lakeland, was tucked inside another bill.

While many of the bill's proposals mirrored the plan the Board of Governors (BOG) laid out for USF-Poly independence, the new proposal seems to take the process out of the BOG's, and USF's, hands. It even gives the University of Florida some oversight in the transition process.

Alexander has been especially critical of USF President Judy Genshaft as he's sought USF-Poly independence.
