CLEARWATER, Florida -- Clearwater police are working to get the word out to drivers: Lock your vehicle doors and don't leave valuables inside. This comes after a spike in burglaries.
Authorities said they're seeing a number of cases where thieves are going into unlocked vehicles in neighborhoods and stealing valuables inside. They say it's on ongoing problem.
There is, however, a disturbing trend when it comes to smash and grab vehicle burglaries, with thieves breaking windows to get to items left in plain view. There have been more than 40 throughout the city since October at parking lots at malls, gyms, and other businesses.
During patrols, officers have been talking to people in neighborhoods that were hit. Police are asking everyone to make sure they lock their vehicle doors and don't leave anything valuable inside. Also, call police if you see anything suspicious.
