Phoenix, AZ - It appears everyone has heard the story.

It was standing room only as a crowd showed up for a chance to adopt this little star who has received worldwide attention from as far away as Australia.

Someone rescued the 8-week-old puppy after he got stuck to a cactus and removed nearly a five gallon bucket of cactus needles from him.

The pictures (above) show the puppy right afterwards, and earned him the name "Cactus Jack."

The Arizona Humane Society told reporter Corey Rangel of KNXV that 73 people threw their names into a lottery hoping to take the little guy home.

So who got to take Cactus Jack home? Her name is Sara Messerschmidt.

"I'm shaking. I'm so excited. I wanted this so bad," Sara said.

Like so many, Sara heard about Cactus Jack and fell in love with his story.

She had this to say, "This story was just heart wrenching, heartbreaking but the thing that just drew my heart to it was the fact that he was that he just kept wagging his tail through all the hard times and heartache and pain."

While Sara is Cactus Jack's new owner eight other people who wanted to adopt him ended up adopting other pets.
