Clearwater, Florida - Parents and school officials are very concerned after an incident in a Clearwater elementary school involving an insulin pen.
According to officials with Pinellas Schools, a student at Sandy Lane Elementary brought the device to school Friday morning. They said before classes began, 15 students who were sitting in the cafeteria began pricking themselves and others with it.
"Very dangerous. Very dangerous. You're talking about life and death," said Geneva Fisher, whose granddaughter goes to Sandy Lane.
Officials added, some students were left with marks and some were not. On others, the pen broke the skin. The students saw the school nurse, and then got treatment if needed.
"The parents were notified of what happened and advised to speak to their healthcare provider and if they did not have a healthcare provider, the school district is providing a service, an option to go to a clinic and have a baseline blood test done of their child, if they would like to," said public information officer with Pinellas County Schools, Melanie Marquez.
It's unclear right now how this student got the insulin pen.
