St. Petersburg, Florida -- Friends and family of the Shaw family of St. Petersburg were already in mourning, after the passing of Tory Shaw, 41.

Friends tell 10 News Tory lost her battle with lung cancer on June 11th, passing away in her home on Orpine Drive. On Tuesday they were preparing to honor her life during an afternoon memorial service, when they learned more devastating news.

Tory's husband of 18 years, Richard "Rick" Shaw, 41, was shot during an early morning home invasion at their home.

St. Petersburg Police say shortly before 5 a.m., multiple suspects forced their way into Shaw's home. They yelled out "Police! Police! Police!" as they broke in, and then demanded cash and drugs.

At some point during the robbery, Shaw was shot in the upper body. He was taken to Northside Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The couple's adult son was the only other person at home at the time of the shooting. He was not hurt.  Family friends say Tory has another son from a previous marriage who was not at the house.

Friends tell 10 News Tory and Richard were immensely in love.  They were too distraught to talk on camera, but this morning said they plan to move forward with the memorial service.

Only this time, they'll be honoring the lives of two beloved friends.

Second home invasion nearby

Shaw's home wasn't the only target, it seems. Twenty minutes earlier, another home invasion happened on 1st Street North, about a mile away.

In this first home invasion, Gregg M. Gordon and his wife, Rebecca, told the police they were asleep in bed when several armed suspects forced entry into their home. Just like in the Shaw robbery, they yelled "Police! Police! Police!" as they stormed inside.

The armed suspects then demanded cash and jewelry. One of the suspects punched Gordon several times and struck him in the head with an unknown object as they searched through the home before leaving the residence with several items.

The armed suspects in both robberies were generally described as males in their late teens or early 20's, some of them had their faces covered and all of them wore dark clothing.

Gordon was treated and released at Bayfront Medical Center.

Police believe the victims in both home invasions were specifically targeted, and were not picked at random by the suspects.

St. Petersburg Police are asking anyone with information on this case to call the tipline at 727-892-5000 or  the Communications Center at 727-893-7780.

You can also call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS.
