WAYS TO SAVE: #'s your internet provider doesn't want you to see

TAMPA, FL. -- Today it's time to expose the truth about your Internet connection.

We're inundated with ads, commercials and offerings from Internet providers claiming to give you faster, reliable speeds.

Maybe you're about to renew a contract.

My recommendation: Start with a simple free website that exposes some info your Internet provider might not want you to see.

Today a simple, free, reputable website can test your Internet speed. There are test sites throughout the continent and these tests are comprehensive enough for your Internet provider to pay attention -- which is where the money saving part comes in.

You might be paying way too much for the "high speed" cable or DSL service you subscribe to. Many Internet providers, such as Verizon, AT&T and Time Warner guarantee a minimum speed or at least specify a speed range.

If that speed is not being met, you have every right to call your Internet provider and ask for a different package or a better rate. I've found that many providers are willing to lower the cost if their minimum speed is not being met or at least come and look at your hookup to possibly improve the connection.

The results from today's website are accurate, but I highly recommend running the test twice, from two different "spots on the map" just to double check as traffic at one test site can slightly alter results.

The website also provides offers from other companies. It's a good idea to see what else is out there, but I don't suggest signing up for any offer on the spot.

There's also an offer to speed up your computer, which I do not recommend using -- I'm only talking about the Free Speed Test on today's website.

Finally, a great way to improve your speed is to have a great router (if your primary connection is wireless). Below is a roundup of the top router deals on the market:
