TAMPA, Fla. -- The Lightning kicked off their developmental rookie camp on Tuesday hosting a total of 30 draftees, free agents and invitees. Among them were the Bolts two first round picks Slater Koekkoek and Andrei Vasilevski.
Tampa Bay's first pick in the 2012 Draft, Slater Koekoek is expected to play sooner than later for the Lightning, at 6'2" and 182 pounds the 10th overall pick is a true 2-way defenseman and he's been looking forward to showing the Bolts what he can do.
"I just want to come be me and show what I can do... You know, make a good impression and just show them what they drafted," said Koekoek.
Also selected in the 1st round this year was Russian goalie Andrei Vasilevski. At 6'3" and 204 pounds he's a big guy with impressive agility and quickness. Vasilevski explained after his first practice that he wants to make it to the NHL as soon as possible and he's going to work hard to make it happen.
"He's very big and he's very athletic and that's been a trend right now in the NHL, the successful ones have those two traits" said Lightning GM Steve Yzerman.
The Lightning's development camp is free and open to the public at the Brandon Ice Sports Forum.
