TAMPA, Florida -- A teen is dead after an officer-involved shooting at a Tampa apartment complex.

Officers were dispatched to the Central Court Apartments Sunday night after reports someone was shooting a weapon in the street. When they arrived, they immediately spotted a person matching the suspect's description and approached him.

The suspect, 16-year-old Javon Neal, allegedly ran from the officers up a staircase, then pulled something out of his pant leg. Tampa police say he then turned toward the officers with a shotgun. They commanded him to drop the weapon, then fired at him in self-defense when he didn't comply.

Neal was shot at least once. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he later died.

The two officers will be placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
