VENICE, Florida - Located right off Tamiami Trail on beautiful Robert's Bay, Marker 4 Oyster Bar is known for both its amazing views and savory seafood.
"I had the grilled grouper, probably the best piece of fish I've had since I've been down here," said customer Dave Johnson from Boston.
But Johnson was unaware Marker 4 got bad marks from the state, racking up 13 critical violations on their July 18 inspection. The biggest problem: ROACHES.
The inspector documented dead roaches on a shelf above where the food is prepared, and 32 live roaches -- including by the main food prep table, on the kitchen floor, underneath the frying station, crawling across the ketchup and mustard packets. They also found roach eggs inside a box of plastic silverware.
The inspector returned the following day and documented finding more roaches on the salad dressing, behind the knife holder, in with the cups, and crawling up the walls.
"There were some roaches in the dry food area, but no roaches in the food or anywhere else," said Marker 4 manager Richard Mote. "We took everything out, all the dry storage, every dish, took everything outside, had it taken care of. We had our exterminators come in not once, but twice."
Mote even offered to take our camera on a tour of the kitchen. Inside, we found food up off the floor, soap at the employee hand sink, and no more bugs.
Customers we talked to were very happy to hear that news.
"They had a problem, it was addressed," said Johnson. "I came here twice, I ate here yesterday and I ate here tonight, and I would come back tomorrow."
Management says they're committed to keeping their kitchen clean. "We're all taken care of," said Mote. "We're striving not to have anything like that happen again."
