Winter Haven, Florida-- Winter Haven Police arrested a former Avis Car Rental employee Monday after he allegedly took a car for a joy ride and crashed it.

On Wednesday, August 1, Avis Car Rental reported a stolen 2011 Chevrolet Camaro. A Polk County Sheriff Deputy found the abandoned car in Lakeland with significant front end damage.

Winter Haven Detectives were able to identify 23-year-old Michael Timothy Johnson, Jr. as a worker at Avis, and ultimately linked him to the theft, reports say.

When Detectives went to his home to make the arrest, Johnson refused to come downstairs. Officials say detectives saw him attempt to jump out of an upstairs window in the back of the house to flee. However, a waiting Winter Haven Police Officer and K-9 partner persuaded Johnson to surrender, and exit through the front door.

On Monday, August 20, police booked Johnson into the Polk County Jail on charges of Burglary, Grand Theft Automobile, Petit Theft and Resisting/Obstructing Without Violence.
