Jacob Meachum has not fully regained conciousness since being involved in an accident back in June

VALRICO, Fla. - Dozens of people attended a fundraiser in Valrico on Sunday for a teenager, suffering from a traumatic brain injury. Jacob Meachum's family said the 15-year-old remains in a vegetative state and has not fully regained consciousness since he was involved in an accident back in June. The benefit raised more than $11,000 for Jacob's care.

"Just unbelievable. And there aren't words good enough to thank everyone for what they've done and what they're doing," said Jacob's mother, Joie Shell.

The Aquali Salon in Valrico hosted the benefit, which included salon and spa services, raffles, and food.

Back in June, Jacob was riding in a utility vehicle with his brother and friend. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the teen's brother ran through a stop sign along Futch Loop at S. Wiggins Road and an SUV slammed into them. Jacob was thrown off.

His mother said he is making some progress.

"He is smiling, he is following commands. He has just made leaps and bounds of progress over the last week and a half," she said.

According to Jacob's family, the driver of the SUV, identified as Guadalupe Moreno, was driving with a suspended license, drinking and driving, speeding, and had no insurance.

Authorities said the accident is still under investigation and Moreno has not been charged with anything. He does however have a prior DUI arrest.
