  • Moore Haven, Florida (News-Press) -- Fred Langdale, the Moore Haven 17-year-old who lost part of his right arm to an alligator attack in July, was recently fitted for the latest version of a bionic hand. The hunting and airboat aficionado who loves to be outdoors chose a custom camouflage design. The gator attack attracted a national spotlight to Langdale.

The hand was just launched in the United States at the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Academy's National Meeting in Boston last week, according to Hanger Clinic, the largest prosthetic and orthotic patient care company in the United States. Langdale was one of the first in the world to receive this new technology and is the first U.S. recipient, said a Hanger spokeswoman.

The company partnered with the nonprofit organization Inner Wheel, which is made up of Rotary wives, to donate the arm that costs about $80,000.

To help with additional costs, Moore Haven residents have organized a "fun day" benefit with live bands, a 5K and buggy rides for Langdale on Oct. 6 in the town. For information, visit www.gatorfred.com.
