Brooksville, Florida -- The Florida Highway Patrol says a horse was killed and two motorists injured after the animal was struck as it wandered in the road.
According to a preliminary FHP report, 20-year-old Lauren Matthews was driving westbound on Ayers Road, east of Culbreath Road at about 6 a.m. Wednesday. A horse then walked into the roadway and into the path of Matthews' car.
Matthews was unable to avoid the horse and hit it. Her car then went off the road, hit a concrete culvert which sent it airborne, and finally struck a power pole.
Shortly afterwards, a minivan came upon the horse and crashed directly into it, killing the animal.
The driver of the minivan, 56-year-old Margaret Altman, was able to bring her vehicle to a stop, and came upon Matthews' crash scene.
Matthews was airlifted to Bayonet Point Medical Center with serious injuries, while Altman suffered minor injuries.
There's no word yet on where the horse came from or why it was walking in the road.
