COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo (KUSA) - A video posted to YouTube this weekend has gone viral with political outrage after a young woman registering people to vote was recorded saying she worked for the clerk's office but was only registering people who wanted to vote for Mitt Romney.
The El Paso County Clerk & Recorder on Sunday night issued a statement to clear the confusion on the matter saying the young woman does not work for their office.
"The statement made in this video is both unfortunate and inaccurate," said Clerk & Recorder Wayne Williams.
"My office does not and will not engage in partisan voter registration. It is the duty of the Clerk's office to ensure that elections are conducted in a fair and honest manner, this includes allowing any one to register to vote regardless of their political party affiliation."
9NEWS learned Sunday that the young woman is a volunteer for the Romney campaign. They say she was inexperienced and have since spoke with her.
The video was taken outside a Safeway store in El Paso County more than a month ago by a known Democratic supporter.
Republicans claim it was released at a time to make their campaign look silly.
"I think this is extremely sad this is released over a month after the video was shot," said Eli Bremer, the chairman of the El Paso County Republican Party. "It's clearly just a campaign tactic that someone is trying to use to damage the Romney campaign image and a young lady trying to get involved."
Democrats deny that claim.
"Even if you can ask preference questions," said El Paso County Democratic Party Executive Director Christy Lelait. "Which we would never dream of doing, the goal is to register people. You don't want anyone to feel like they're being screened out. She does make it very clear she does want to register Romney supporters."
The Clerk & Recorder has asked the woman who posted to the video to remove it from YouTube because it contains inaccurate information. They say she has refused to remove the video.
The Clerk & Recorder says as long as people registering voters doesn't deny registration to people with opposing views, asking screening questions is legal.
