TAMPA BAY, Florida -- If anyone knows about officiating, it's Tim Donaghy. The infamous NBA referee was busted for fraud, and wrote a tell-all book. He knows the inner workings of pro sports, especially betting on games in Vegas.
Donaghy analyzed the infamous last play of the Packers/Seahawks game for 10 News, and explained how it could affect the NFL and Sportsbook.com, the online sports gambling site. "Sportsbook betting would definitely be impacted by that, because trends will come up with certain refs and professional gamblers will pick up on those trends," he said.
At issue is the NFL's integrity as it relates to fan loyalty and, specifically, betting on the games. Donaghy said professional gamblers would have an unfair advantage, because they know what to look for.
"Billions and billions of dollars are bet every year on NFL games and it has a high interest because of that. A game like this one, where the outcome is changed because of a call, can be the difference of $150 million bet on side going to another side."
Sportsbook and the NFL have much to lose in regard to faith in the system, because intrinsically, amateur gamblers will rebuke deception by closing their wallets.
"If you bet Seattle, you won last night, when in reality you should have lost," added Donaghy.
