Video: Neighbor dispute turns deadly

Neighbors say this is a photo of the victim, John Gallik, in this deadly neighborhood dispute

Apollo Beach, Florida -- The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says no charges have been filed at this point against the shooter in a neighborhood dispute that left one man dead.

The victim is identified as 52-year-old John Gallick.

Deputies say Gallik's neighbor, 67-year-old David Cockerham was walking his dog with his wife along the sidewalk on Silver Falls Drive when his dog became startled by something in front of Gallik's home, knocking over a sign that was partially blocking the sidewalk.

As Cockerham went to move the sign from the sidewalk, deputies say Gallik came out of his home, yelling profanities and waving a butterfly knife, threatening to cut Cockerham's throat.

Out of fear for his life, deputies say Cockerham pulled out of a .38 caliber handgun from his pocket and fired a single shot at Gallik, hitting him in the torso. Gallik died on scene.

Deputies say Cockerham called 911 and waited for deputies to arrive on scene. He has been cooperative

He was released after several hours of questioning. No charges have been filed this point, pending the outcome of an investigation by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and State Attorney's Office.

It will be up to the State Attorney's Office to decide whether the Stand Your Ground law applies in this case.

Detectives will be back in the neighborhood Friday to continue their investigation.

HCSO tells 10 News there have been several calls to Gallik's address in previous years. There were six this year, including the two calls regarding the shooting on Thursday.

The first call on June 4 involved a mentally ill/violent person. The next day, HCSO says they were called out again for a suicide attempt. The remaining two calls this year occured in September. One to assist another agency and the other, a suspicious person.

Detectives are still working to determine whether the two men involved in this shooting had previous confrontations.
