Honolulu, HI (Sports Network) - Joe Southwick threw for 209 yards and three
touchdowns as the Boise State Broncos rolled over the Hawaii Warriors, 49-14,
in a Mountain West Conference matchup at Aloha Stadium.
Southwick completed 17-of-29 pass attempts in the game for Boise State (8-2,
6-1 MWC) which had a seven-game winning streak ended last week. Aaron Burks
brought in five passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. Jay Ajayi led the
Broncos with 54 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Sean Schroeder started at quarterback for Hawaii (1-8, 0-6) and completed 10-
of-19 pass attempts for 100 yards and an interception. Jeremy Higgins came in
midway through the third quarter and threw for 154 yards and an interception
on 11-of-17 passing.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard first with a seven-yard touchdown run from
Shane Williams-Rhodes less than three minutes into the game. The score was set
up by a 37-yard punt return by Chris Potter.
Hawaii didn't wait long to strike back. On the ensuing kickoff Mike Edwards
took the ball 100 yards for a touchdown, evening the score at 7-7. From there
Boise State took control.
First Southwich connected with Matt Miller for a three-yard touchdown pass.
Southwich then hooked up with Burks for a 46-yard touchdown strike before the
end of the first quarter.
Ajayi added a 13-yard rushing touchdown midway through the second quarter for
Boise State.
Southwick struck again, this time on a 10-yard touchdown pass to Holden Huff,
to give the Broncos a 35-7 lead going into halftime.
All five of Boise State's first half scoring drives lasted less than three
minutes.
Boise State's defense put points up in the third quarter when Demarcus
Lawrence returned a fumble 25 yards for a touchdown. Jonathan Brown forced
the fumble when he sacked Hawaii quarterback Sean Schroeder.
Backup quarterback Grant Hedrick scored on a four-yard touchdown run in the
fourth quarter for the Broncos.
Hawaii put an end to the Bronco's unanswered scoring streak with a one-yard
touchdown run from John Lister late in the fourth quarter.
Boise State outgained Hawaii by a 411-240 margin in total yards and collected
six sacks.
