TAMPA, Florida -- We've learned more about the Tampa woman who sparked an FBI investigation that led to the uncovering of an extramarital affair between General David Petraeus and his biographer and alleged girlfriend, Paula Broadwell.
Jill Kelley issued this statement:
"We and our family have been friends with Gen. Petraeus and his family for over five years. We respect his and his family's privacy and want the same for us and our three children."
Kelley, an unpaid social liaison to MacDill Air Force Base, received harassing emails from Broadwell. It was reported to the FBI, which learned about Petraeus' affair with Broadwell while investigating the emails.
Petraeus resigned his position as head of the CIA on Friday after admitting to the affair.
Jill Kelley and her husband, Dr. Scott Kelley, a cancer surgeon, live along Bayshore Boulevard. Sunday afternoon, the couple apparently held a birthday party for one of their children. No one answered the door when 10 News knocked on it afterwards. Later, a woman who appeared to be Jill took off in a SUV.
Neighbors were unaware of Kelley's apparent involvement in the Petraeus scandal.
"They're great friends and they're great neighbors. And I'm shocked by the news," said neighbor Jim Walters.
Head of the Senate Intelligence Committee Senator Dianne Feinstein said she plans on investigating why she was not notified when the FBI probe on Petraeus started. She said it's something that could have had an effect on national security.
