LAKELAND, Florida -- Polk County traffic homicide investigators arrested a man they say left the scene of a crash that killed a 16-year-old boy.
According to the arrest affidavit, 29-year-old Christopher Koenig and a friend left the Paddy Wagon Irish Pub in Lakeland around 1:40 a.m. Sunday and were traveling eastbound on CR 540-A when Koenig struck the teen, Blake Dowdy. Investigators say Dowdy and a friend were walking along the shoulder of the road at the time.
Deputies say Koenig's truck didn't slow down, brake, or stop after the accident. Instead, Dowdy's friend told deputies the vehicle fled.
Dowdy was reportedly thrown approximately 87 feet into a drainage ditch south of the roadway. He died at the scene.
About 40 minutes later, deputies say Koenig called the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office and told dispatchers he had hit someone in his truck while driving home from the bar.
Koenig was taken into custody. He admitted to deputies he had been drinking. A blood sample was sent to the FDLE lab for analysis.
