New Rochelle, NY (Sports Network) - Sean Armand posted a double-double with 18
points and 11 rebounds to lead the Iona Gaels over the Niagara Purple Eagles,
83-72, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Center.
Curtis Dennis added 17 points off the bench for the Gaels (3-2, 1-0 MAAC),
while Lamont Jones, Tavon Sledge and Tre Bowman each finished with 12 points.
For the Purple Eagles (2-4, 0-1), Antoine Mason led all scorers with 24
points. Marvin Jordan scored 14, Ameen Tanksley notched a double-double with
13 points and 11 rebounds and Juan'ya Green chipped in with 12 points in the
Iona shot very well to open the contest, hitting 53.6 percent of its field
goals including 6-of-11 on three-point attempts, as the Gaels went into
halftime leading 43-21. Niagara converted 48 percent from the floor, but could
only make 3-of-11 of its three-point attempts and 4-of-9 at the free-throw
line in the half.
In the second half the Purple Eagles shot 40 percent from the floor, 3-of-12
from three-point range. While the Gaels shooting percentage dropped to 38.2
percent, they were able to connect on 6-of-15 from beyond the arc as they
secured the double-digit win.
The Gaels outscored the Purple Eagles 36-18 behind the three-point line.
