Bradenton, Florida -- Students at Oneco Elementary School teamed up with the Manasota Elks for a special veterans project.
Over the past few weeks, nearly two dozen students in an arts and quilts club came to school early to make over 100 lap blankets for a local veterans program as a way to say thank you for all they have done for our country.

"It's really heartwarming to see the students giving back to the community and the excitement in their eyes knowing this is about the veterans and not about them," said Marie Mueller, who worked with the students on the project.
The project, Mueller said, started about four years ago as a 21st century project and it blossomed after a former student from Daughtrey Elementary inquired about the blanket club and if they could still do it. Since then, it moved to Oneco Elementary with plans to continue in the future.
On the morning of Dec. 5, 10 to 12 veterans from Bay Pines VA Healthcare System in St. Petersburg came to Oneco Elememtary for a special lunch where the students and Elks presented them with the blankets.
