Tampa, Florida -- Tampa Police say an officer broke one foot and sprained the other after falling down a flight of stairs during a call.

The officers were trying to help a man who called 911 operators requesting someone take him to a detox facility or "something bad" would happen.

Police say the 911 operator sensed something was not quite right with the call after the man told her he had weapons inside his second story apartment.

Six officers responded to the complex at Interbay and Roberts Avenue in South Tampa, not far from MacDill Air Force Base.

As three of the officers knocked on the door to tell the man they were there to help him, police say he swung the door open and pointed what appeared to be a rifle at the officers.

Lt. William Ferguson with TPD says Officer John Behanna fired his department issued weapon three times.

The man was not hit and barricaded himself inside.

As the officers retreated, that is when Officer Gerald Jean fell down the stairs and was injured.

The man eventually came out of his apartment and was arrested. He's identified has 42-year-old David Voutas. Voutas is facing a charge of aggravated assault.

TPD says they are looking into the possibility that this may have been a "suicide by cop" attempt.
