TALLAHASSEE, Florida - Floridians have selected their favorite design for the state's next license plate.

People have been voting online for their favorite design over the past several weeks. The most popular of the four options is the plate with green bars at the top and bottom.

It also features an orange in the "O" in the word "Florida" at the top.

The voting was pretty close. The winner received more than 15,441 votes. The second place design was about 500 behind with 14,875 votes, while the third place option ended up with 13,616 votes.

The plain design garnered only 6,192 votes.

The new plate will feature a new design, but you will be able to pick from two different phrases at the bottom, according to state spokeswoman Kirsten Olsen-Doolan.

"In the design, we have 'Sunshine State' at the bottom and we're also going to propose that 'In God We Trust,' the state motto, is also allowed on plates. One of the proposals was to take the county designations off because that's a lot of inventory management and it would save money to just have those two versions of plates. So people will be able to get either phrase on the bottom of their plate."

Now the design goes to Gov. Rick Scott and members of the Florida Cabinet for approval. If they pass it, the new plate will start going on Florida's 18 million vehicles starting in 2014.

However, it's still unclear who will make the new plate. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles plans to take bids for manufacturing the plate.

The other issue of distribution generated a lot of controversy when the department originally proposed privatizing some parts of the distribution process. But a protest from tax collectors prompted the state to abandon the idea of changing how plates are distributed.
