St. Petersburg, FL - After more than 2-hours of debate Thursday, the St. Petersburg City Council took no action on the city's controversial red light cameras, meaning they will remain. In fact after the first of the year the mayor may even decide to add some new cameras.

"It's about public safety," Mayor Bill Foster said earlier in the day about the cameras.

"My goal is to modify enough drivers' behavior that we see a marked decrease in red light running and red light related crashes."

But Councilman Wengay Newton says the cameras are actually causing more rear end collisions because some drivers are slamming on their brakes to avoid getting a red light ticket.

Prior to Thursday meeting the Mayor was looking to add 9 more cameras, bringing the total in the city to 31.
