Tampa, Florida -- Gasparilla is a tradition deep-rooted in Tampa's history, from the first invasion by horseback by the pirates of Ye Mystic Krewe in 1904 to the street parade that attracts tens of thousands each year along Bayshore Boulevard.
It's part of Tampa's culture and now it's a brand with officially licensed merchandise.
"This is the first year that there's a full merchandise line and a whole licensing program we're creating for this," said Richard Moore, President of Encore Select Inc, the Tampa based company behind the brand.
Encore Select is printing as many as 15,000 t-shirts, along with hats and bags for your beads and groceries.
"Put a little skull on it and maybe you've got a little attitude, you know," said Moore.
The embroidery machines at Encore are whipping up hats and company shirts, but there's more... onesies for babies are on the way and koozies for your drinks are headed for the press.
"We would like to see an official Gasparilla retail store, areas where people can gather, see about the history of Gasparilla. I think we want to incorporate it more into the Tampa lifestyle brand," said Moore.
As you'd guess, as the creator of the official Gasparilla brand, it's a boost for Moore's Tampa based business so he's banking on the success of the brand.
The Gasparilla merchandise is available at stores throughout Tampa including Publix, Target, Walmart and Walgreens or online at gasparillapirategear.com.
The Children's Gasparilla Extravaganza is Saturday, January 19. The Gasparilla pIrate Fest is Saturday, January 26.
