Clearwater, Florida -- A Pinellas County woman has been convicted of animal cruelty for keeping a tight rubber band over a puppy's snout.

A judge sentenced Tieesha Cogdell of Largo to six months in jail, followed by one year probation and a lifetime ban on owning dogs.

The Yorkie-poodle mix, named Sox, was rescued in December of 2011 after investigators say he was left alone in the bathroom for weeks. The rubber band clamped the dog's mouth shut and had begun cutting into the growing pup's snout. Cogdell claims she didn't know how the rubber band got there, and only noticed it when Sox began to have trouble breathing.

Following Wednesday's guilty verdict, Cogdell was also ordered to pay for the treatment SPCA veterinarians gave to help Sox's recovery.  The cost is probably around $2,000, but an exact amount will be decided at a hearing on May 1.

Sox was able to be nursed back to health and has since been adopted.
