Tallahassee, Florida - Florida's new education commissioner says he wants to make the state's education system the best in the nation.

Tony Bennett introduced himself to Florida at Wednesday's meeting with Gov. Rick Scott and Cabinet members.

Bennett comes to Florida from Indiana where he served as state superintendent of schools for four years. Voters there recently decided not to give him a second term.

Bennett says he has admired Florida's education system because he thinks it has been a national leader for years.

"I look forward to working with you to make sure that Florida is number one and that our children are first and that they have the best opportunities for job and university placement in the country."

Gov. Rick Scott says Bennett has his work cut out for himself because a recent survey ranked Florida's education system as sixth in the nation, and another study found Florida's fourth grade reading levels rank second in the world behind Singapore.

Bennett replaces Gerard Robinson, who resigned from the job last August.
