Organic spinach recalled; possible E.coli contaminated spinach sold in Tampa Bay

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida -- Taylor Farms is issuing a voluntary recall for fresh, organic baby spinach sold in at least 36 states, including Florida.

A 10 News viewer told us Sam's Club in the Tampa Bay area sent out an automated message to alert customers who had bought the potentially E.coli contaminated spinach.

Other stores that have carried the brand include Walmart and Whole Foods.

The organic baby spinach is sold under five names: Simple Truth Organic, Marketside Organic, Taylor Farms, Central Market Organics, and Full Circle.

The spinach has a best by date of 2/24. 16-ounce tray UPC#0-30223-04780-3

Return the spinach to the store where you bought it for a full refund.

Symptoms of E.coli can include:

Severe stomach cramps and stomach tenderness.

Diarrhea, watery at first, but often becoming very bloody.

Nausea and vomiting.

Here are additional tips to prevent E.coli contamination:

Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with warm soapy water before and after handling food, using the bathroom, or changing your baby's diaper.

Clean and sanitize utensils, cutting boards and countertops often.

Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating (even the ones you peel or those that are "prewashed").

Drink only pasteurized milk, juice and cider.

Use a meat thermometer to ensure your meat is cooked completely. Don't judge the doneness of meat by how it looks, because hamburger can turn brown before it has reached a safe internal temperature of 71oC (160oF).

Place raw meats on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator so the juices cannot drip onto other foods.

Have separate cutting boards for raw meat, vegetables and cooked foods.

Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot. Bacteria grows fastest in the "danger zone", which is between 4°C and 60°C (40°F to 140°F).
