Tampa, Florida-Hillsborough County Fire responded to a two vehicle crash at the intersection of Dale Mabry Hwy and Bearss early Sunday morning.
According to HCFR spokesperson Ronnie Rivera, 20-year-old Michael Backus of Odessa died after the Ford Explorer he was driving overturned and started on fire.
The driver of the other vehicle, 49-year-old Edward Scanlon of Tampa, and his passenger, 43-year-old Michael Patrick Scanlon of Indian Trail, North Carolina, were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries.
Backus was traveling north on Dale Mabry Highway in the center lane, according to Hillsborough Co. Fire Rescue. Scanlon was traveling south on Dale Mabry Highway in the left turn lane. Under a green traffic signal, Scanlon allegedly attempted to make a left turn onto Bearss Avenue.
Backus failed to stop at the red light signal and crashed into the path of Scanlon.
Backus then rotated clockwise, overturned and finally struck a pedestrian cross walk sign before erupting into flames.
