Lakeland, Florida -- A Polk County teacher and her husband are facing charges after deputies say they moved into an empty home they didn't actually own.

Cherie and Owen Fields, both 27, allegedly moved into a home in Imperial Lakes back in March. Neighbors reported seeing a locksmith at the home, along with trucks from Rooms-To-Go and Aaron's Rentals.  Owen Fields had electricity activated at the property on March 27.

The problem is the actual owner of the home, who currently lives in California, never gave permission for the Fields to take possession of the residence.

"It is hard to believe that an educated person could believe that you can just walk into someone else's house, change the locks and take it from them," Polk Sheriff Grady Judd said in a press release.

Cherie Fields is a teacher at Fort Meade Middle - Senior High School, while her husband is a night auditor at a local motel.  The couple face charges of burglary of a residence, grand theft and scheming to defraud.
