    Feb 26, 2012: Trayvon Martin is shot and killed in a Sanford, Florida townhome community by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. Zimmerman tells police he shot the unarmed 17-year-old in self-defense.

    March 8, 2012: Martin's family holds a press conference to call attention to the case.

    March 12, 2012: Sanford police chief says there are no grounds to arrest Zimmerman since there is no evidence to disprove his self-defense claims.

    March 22, 2012: Gov. Rick Scott appoints a special prosecutor to investigate Martin's death.

    March 26, 2012: Demonstrators around the nation call for Zimmerman's arrest.

    April 11, 2012: The special prosecutor charges Zimmerman with second-degree murder. Orlando attorney Mark O'Mara says he has been hired to represent Zimmerman.

    April 23, 2012: Zimmerman makes bail and is released from the Seminole County Jail. He is fitted with a GPS tracking device.

    May 15, 2012: Zimmerman's medical report show he was diagnosed with a broken nose, two black eyes and lacerations on his scalp after his altercation with Martin.

    June 1, 2012: Judge Kenneth Lester revokes Zimmerman's bail, saying the defendant misrepresented how much money he had during bail hearings. Zimmerman later surrenders.

    June 20, 2012: Sanford fires Police Chief Bill Lee.

    July 6, 2012: Zimmerman posts $1 million bond and is released.

    Aug. 29, 2012: An appeals court removes Judge Lester from the case, saying he could be biased based on comments he made regarding the bond issue. Judge Debra Nelson is later assigned.

    Feb. 5, 2013: Sanford leaders take part in a peace rally on what would have been Martin's 18th birthday.

    Feb. 26, 2013: Rallies nationwide commemorate the one-year anniversary of the shooting.

    March 5, 2013: O'Mara said he will not require a pre-trial "Stand Your Ground" hearing, but reserves the right to bring the matter up at trial.

    May 28, 2013: Judge Nelson rules that Zimmerman's lawyers may not mention Martin's marijuana use, text messages or school records in opening statements. She left the door open to possibly introduce those matters as evidence during the trial. The judge also rejects a defense request for a delay and says trial will start Monday.
