BRANDON, Florida -- Talk about being caught red-handed; a grungy crook was caught on an iPad with his hands full of merchandise. Almost $4,000 worth of sunglasses swiped from the Sunglass Hut in Brandon Town Center, and cops say he is bold.
"The suspect goes in, stands at the counter, looks right at the clerk and tells her, "You aren't going to like what I'm going to do,'" said Larry McKinnon, spokesman for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
But this crook is really bold. The theft was his second in just six days. The manager recognized him from his first theft and snapped the picture with her iPad before he could bolt from the mall though Macy's.
"Pretty bold for him to just walk in and grab stuff, and that concerns us. If he does it once, he'll do it again. The manager recognized him and was ready with her iPad when he swiped all the sunglasses," said McKinnon.
Video inside the Sunglass Hut reveals it would be very easy to be shady. Some items are locked in cases, but the majority are unprotected, and some don't even have an anti-theft device.
Down the corridor at Oakley, it's harder to get at the goods. Employees use keys to unlock the cases for inquiring customers.
But tonight the focus is on the suspect's picture, and cops want you to take a good look.
"This time we are fortunate that we have a clear, high quality picture that clearly shows his face. We hope someone will recognize him," said McKinnon.
