Temple Terrace, Florida- This week's Restaurant Red Alert is from a well known locally based chain. A state inspector recommended an emergency closure of the Checkers located on 56th Street just south of Busch Blvd. in Hillsborough County.

The fast food restaurant was closed June 19th after the inspector documented 10 violations, considered high priority.

Among the issues were temperature violations on the cooked meats, not being held at a hot enough temperature. That was a repeat violation according to state records.

The state also found roaches, both dead and alive, by the mop sink near the bread, in a base board, one with an egg sack under the drive-thru cash register, and 35-50 live roaches in the sub basement area.

Customers were not too happy to hear the news.

"To me if they're crawling around the counters, it could be crawling around the food they're putting out the window for people," said one customer on her way out with a milkshake.

We stopped by the Checkers location in question Wednesday afternoon to check things out. Management told us cameras were not ever allowed in the kitchen, and referred us to the corporate office for comment.

Checkers spokesperson Kim Francis e-mailed us this statement:

"The health and safety of our food is our top priority. The issues found during the most recent health inspection were addressed immediately, and we were authorized to reopen by the next morning. We are committed to maintaining a clean restaurant environment."

We'll let you know how the Temple Terrace Checkers location does on their next state inspection.
