  • Tampa, Florida - It is the trial garnering attention all over the country.

A neighborhood watch captain kills an unarmed teenager in his Sanford neighborhood on a dark, rainy night.

George Zimmerman says he acted in self-defense when he shot Trayvon Martin. Martin was walking home from the store after buying a can of fruit juice and a bag of Skittles.

Zimmerman claims there had been a number of crimes in his neighborhood, and that Martin looked "suspicious." Zimmerman told police Martin was the aggressor.

But, prosecutors call this a clear-cut case of murder, second degree murder to be exact, and they say Zimmerman was a "wanna-be" cop who was on a mission.

Now, a jury of all women will have to decide if Zimmerman was truly in fear of his life.

Under Florida law, Second Degree Murder is defined as "the unlawful killing of a human being, when perpetrated by any act imminently dangerous to another and evincing a depraved mind regardless of human life, although without any premeditated design to effect the death of any particular individual."

    Zimmerman faces life in prison.

Also on the table is a lesser-included charge of manslaughter.

In the video above, legal expert Joe Episcopo weighs in on the case as a legal analyst for 10 News, and says the "case was overcharged," and that "it never should have gone this far."

"The state attorney was reaching in this case. George Zimmerman should never have been arrested," Episcopo maintains.

The defense will deliver closing arguments Friday morning, and the jury will then deliberate the case. Stick with 10 News as we wait out the verdict.
