(Tallahassee Democrat) -- Tallahassee Police Department officers hauled a naked man out of Lake
Ella Thursday afternoon as a crowd of people, including children,
According to the arrest
report, Derral J. McGinnis refused to exit the lake when
TPD officer instructed him to. He replied to officers that he was unable
to exit because he was naked and that he had entered the lake fully
clothed to swim when his clothing had come off.
McGinnis, 63, was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and taken to the Leon County Jail.
Mezzina, owner of Joe's Bike Shop which is along the shore of Lake
Ella, said "what was bothering me is that I know that water is toxic."
said he placed a call to TPD, but noticed that while he observed the
man in the water, he had clothing on. "He was yelling that he lost his
shorts," Mezzina said. "And that's probably what happened."
was seen hanging on onto a turtle platform in the middle of the lake
and was inaccessible from shore, but Tallahassee Fire Department firemen
assisted, bringing a boat. The police report says that no turtles were
present during the incident.
After being retrieved by
emergency responders, McGinnis said he had entered the lake to swim and
take a bath and had walked most of the way to the platform. He said he
knew he shouldn't have entered the lake, but was adamant about taking a
Mezzina said this is not the first time he has seen
people swimming in the lake; while it doesn't happen often, he notices
it does occur more frequently during the hot days of summer.
arrest report says that McGinnis talked about other locations he could
have gone for a bath, but "he did not want to go there."
Following his removal from the water, McGinnis acknowledged that his behavior was disorderly and that he should be arrested.
The police report says that McGinnis has no local address.
