Tampa, FL - Attorneys working with the family of Ibragim Todashev say the Chechen was unarmed and shot seven times inside his Orlando apartment during an FBI interrogation this past May.
The comments were made during a news conference at the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Tampa on Tuesday, where Todashev's father Ahdulbaki Todashev addressed the American media for the first time since the fatal shooting.
"He didn't do anything wrong. He was simply not capable of doing it," the elder Todashev said about his son through an interpreter.
"I hope and pray that no mother and no father will ever have to endure and go through what I'm going through right now. My son was a very good boy and he's innocent and he was simply killed."
Ahdulbaki Todashev has retained the help of Bay area attorneys Barry Cohen and Eric Ludin and is also getting help from the American Civil Liberties Union and CAIR.
At this point, Todashev is not taking any legal action but his attorneys have not ruled out a wrongful death suit against the FBI down the road.
Todashev's legal team says they also welcome the announcement that Florida prosecutor Jeffery Ashton will conduct his own investigation into what happened the night of May 21.
It's reported the FBI was questioning Ibragim Todashev about his friend, suspected Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev, and three unsolved murders.
Authorities have said little about what led an agent to shoot Todashev inside his Orlando apartment other than to say the 27-year-old was shot after he initiated a violent altercation. But on Tuesday Ludin disputed reports that Todashev was armed with a knife or some other object when he was shot.
"Based on everything that we've learned we have absolutely no reason to think there was any kind of a deadly weapon in the possession of our client or our client's son," Ludin said.
