Tampa Bay area, Florida-- UPDATE: The severe thunderstorm warning has since expired.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties through 7:00 Monday evening.
National weather service meteorologists detected say the severe storms could be capable of producing damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.
The storms were initially located along a line extending from Westchase to Clearwater, about six miles Northwest of the Tampa International Airport.
The storms are moving northwest at 15 mph, and could have an impact on Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Safety Harbor, Belleair, Cheval, Belleair Beach, Oldsmar, Clearwater Beach, Lake Fern, Caladesi Island, Crystal Beach and Honeymoon Island.
Precautionary/preparedness actions for those in the storm's path, courtesy of the National Weather Service, are as follows:
- Prepare immediately for damaging winds, destructive hail and deadly cloud to ground lightning.
- People outside should move to a shelter, preferably inside a strong building but away from windows.
