Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has gotten a lot of complaints regarding a telephone scam.
Reportedly, a number of residents have received a telephone call that attempts to convince the receiving party to wire money to free or otherwise assist a relative in distress. All of the complaints received so far have a common telephone number originating from Massachusetts.
Anyone receiving a similar call is advised to contact the person supposedly needing assistance independently from the call to confirm their need.
Do not wire money without confirmation that the call is legitimate and not a scam.
Anyone who receives a similar call is asked to contact their local Law Enforcement Agency's to make a report. Locally you can call the non-emergency number 941-316-1201 and ask to be connected to a desk officer who will take a report.
